You’re right, Beverly, but you don’t need to go that far afield to see terrible pollution. Certainly the last couple of times I’ve been down to Los Angeles, the air was so thick in my lungs I felt like I’d smoked half a pack of cigarettes! It also reminds me of a quote from Pillow Talk – where Tony Randall says "You can feel the air in New York. It's got character." Most major cities have pollution problems – though you’re right, it is often worse in Southeast Asia, where the laws aren’t so strict.
Regardless of whether or not Global Warming is ‘a real issue,’ it’s always a good idea to move towards sustainable energy sources that reduce pollution of all kinds. But the coal and oil industries have been ‘the Big Boys’ for so long that they’re (understandably) unwilling to let go of the power they currently wield over Western society – so they try to lull us into thinking the argument is about something that it’s not. The question of whether or not the ice caps are melting is not something most of us find immediacy in. But whether or not we’re breathing in exhaust fumes, or have petroleum runoff in our drinking water, that’s something we’re faced with every day. Trust me, if you've ever been in an open vehicle in Bangkok or Manila, you know exactly why we don't want that kind of pollution to continue and get worse.
It's impossible to tell the truth from the news alone, because there are so many people on both sides of the argument claiming to know the facts, and unless you go to Greenland yourself and watch the ice melt through your fingers, you have to depend on someone else's reporting through their agenda.
I feel like a total idiot asking this, but with everything in the news lately, I just don’t know what to think. How can we know the truth about whether Global Warming is really an issue or not?
